Lantus prefilled Lantus Solostar®

November 20, 2024

Dear SSED Member

Here a last minute information for clinicians.

As you may hear, the quote-part will increase to 40% Lantus prefilled Lantus Solostar® as of December 1, 2024. This will also increase the total yearly quote part (by around 25%) and will concern both adults and children. Pregnant women between 13 weeks of gestational age and 8 weeks postpartum are exempted from the quote parts and not concerned (as far as we know).

The absolute dependency of insulin and small interval dosing (0.5 U) for children with type 1 diabetes needs to be considered and protected at all levels.

Lantus AllStar and JuniorStar®, rechargeable insulin cartridges (1 U and 0.5 U), supply available only for current users (The special situation and needs for young children and people using 0.5 U needs to be emphasized, as the only long acting insulin alternative for small children (Levemir) will end 2026). This population should absolutely be privileged in the supply chain.

Abasaglar Kwikpen® prefilled (biosimilar, 1 U): supply available only for current users

Toujeo prefilled® (1U), probably longer half-life, supply available with the capacity to capture all patients treated with Lantus Solostar®

Tresiba, rechargeable insuline cartridges® (1 U and 0.5 U): longer half-life, supply potentially available

Tresiba Flextouch® (1 U): longer half-life, supply potentially available

Levemir Flexpen® prefilled (1 U), shorter half-life, supply available only up to end of 2026

Levemir rechargeable insuline cartridges® (0.5 and 1 U), shorter half-life, supply available only up to end of 2026

If you wish to prescribe Lantus®, you may want to specify that you need the brand name and not write insulin glargine, as then the pharmacist can also give Abasaglar.
